About Department of Home Science

Brief Summary

Department of Home Science was established in the year 1985-86 with under graduate programme. Post graduate programme was introduced in the year 2003-04 and Ph.D programme was started in 2016. Syllabus of Home Science covers mainly five fields i.e. Foods and Nutrition, Clothing and Textile, Human Development, Home and Family Resource Management, and Extension and Communication. 

Extensive research and publication work has been carried out by department so far which includes 30 research publications in various international and national journals, 25 chapters in different edited books. Faculties have been also actively participating and attending seminars, conferences, refresher courses, orientation programme and workshops.

 On an average 50 students are enrolled every year in undergraduate programme and 25 students in post graduate programme. Presently 13 students are enrolled in the department under Ph.D programme, out of which 09 are UGC-NET qualified and 02 are receiving UGC-JRF. The examination results for the last five years of undergraduate and post graduate student is 90 to 100 per cent in each semester/year. 

The department has two well- equipped laboratories for conduction of practical work related to foods and nutrition and clothing and textiles, each. Social and extension activities are also undertaken by the department which mainly aims to impart various entrepreneurial skills among the rural women and to create awareness regarding various social, nutrition and health issues.

Among departmental alumni, majority of the students are working with NGO’s, some of them are in teaching profession (Govt. & Pvt.), as dietitian in hospitals and some are running their own enterprises. 

Achievements of the department include:

  1. All the sanctioned post in the department is currently engaged with permanent and qualified teaching faculty.
  2. Department is pioneer in conducting researches in the arena of community nutrition, textile science, Human development and communication among all the affiliated government colleges of Kumaun University.
  3. 03 students have been awarded PhD.
  4. Majorities (9/13) of the research scholars are UGC-NET and 02 have qualified UGC-JRF.
  5. Since the past five consecutive years, post graduate students from the department are awarded with University Vice-Chancellor’s gold medal.
  6. The alumni of the department are being placed in various Govt. and private sectors and few of them have set up their own enterprise. To name a few:

  1. The faculty possesses membership of Board of Studies of different universities and of various associations. Beside, the faculties in the department are also members of various Cells & Committees in the college.
